Background

IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative brings together public and private organisations, knowledge, ambitions and interests to make international trade chains more sustainable. An important service IDH provides is the support of stakeholders in making the right choices on their way to digital transformation. To facilitate and streamline that process, IDH conceived a Digital Transformation Analysis (DTA). Us Media was asked to build this tool and to guarantee support and updates.

Digital transformation journey

The DTA toolkit assists IDH consultants worldwide in advising stakeholders in their digital transformation process. In order to arrive at optimum starting points for successful transformation, the tool works according to a number of clear steps:

1. Use Case identification

The first step guides stakeholders in finding and selecting relevant use cases: business cases that describe which decisions are made, what data is required and how the use case contributes to the strategic objectives of the organization. The input consists of customer details and goals such as the value chain, country of origin, type of customer and customer benefits. Based on that input, the tool produces a list of relevant use cases, including details such as the type of customers that benefit the most, potential benefits, technologies, conditions and practical examples.

2. Use Case Prioritization

When the relevant use cases have been identified with the customer, they must be prioritized. To this end, employees of the customer are invited for a desirability and feasibility study. Based on their individual input, the tool calculates an average ranking. Ultimately, this results in a Top 5 of use cases.

3. ROI calculator

The next step is to calculate the potential ROI for each of the use cases from the Top 5. To this end, costs and potential benefits (including indirect benefits, such as quality improvement and more transparency) are entered into the system.

4. Digital Maturity Assessment

Finally, the tool makes it possible to determine what the starting point is for the customer, i.e. the current role of online within the organization (digital maturity), and what the digital ambitions are. The outcome of this step is a “digital maturity score”.

A head start

After going through this process with the DTA, the customer can optimally start their own digital transformation based on the use case: with the most impact, usefulness and relevance. The tool provides an overview of potential technology partners with which the customer can get started with the implementation of the use case.

Our role in the development process of the DTA was UX, development, data processing and visualization. We also provided the cloud infrastructure in which everything runs. In the future we will provide IDH with continuous service and support plus ongoing development of the tool.

angular

The interface of the tool has been developed using Angular. Angular is a javascript application design framework and development platform for creating efficient and advanced single page applications.

aws

The tool runs entirely in the cloud via Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS is Amazon’s cloud platform. AWS offers users a scalable cloud infrastructure and many cloud services that can be used to develop web solutions.

google data studio

Google Data Studio is used for the data visualisations. Data Studio is a free tool from Google that provides insights into data through flexible charts, dashboards and reports.
